Let the vacation...BEGIN! Nothing says, "Welcome to Chicago" like $57 hamburgers. We are fueled and ready to go.

We flew from Chicago O'Hare to Keflavik overnight, the start of our Northern Europe cruise with Kathy, Lisa, Thomas and Grandma. Lisa settled into her window seat early with a stuffed animal and slept through most of the flight. Thomas and Kathy posed for a picture together partway through. Later, the seatback map showed our track curving up over Canada and out across the Atlantic toward Iceland, a long, quiet night in the air before Keflavik.

Leg 1 down. Ready to board the flight to Copenhagen.

Copenhagen bound!

Love these 3.

It looked like we were going under a waterfall, which stopped as we went under. It faked us all out.

We flew from Keflavik to Copenhagen and landed early in the afternoon, with Danish signage waiting at the arrival gate. We checked into our hotel, then climbed aboard a hop-on hop-off bus for a loop around the city. Grandma rode along and caught the Gefion Fountain, its bronze oxen pulling a plow through the spray, and the bus stopped at The Little Mermaid on her rock in the harbor, where Kathy and I had our picture taken. Copenhagen's bike racks were stacked three deep wherever the bus stopped, more bicycles than we had ever seen parked in one place.

Photo: Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, day 2

Around six we went to Tivoli Gardens, past a biergarten sign painted on a doorway. Lisa and Thomas ran up to the entrance pavilion with their arms out, and we rode the roller coaster together, along with a boat around the lake and one of the big swing rides. Later Thomas and I shared a snack. As it got dark the gardens lit up with lanterns and colored lights, and a pirate ship glowed on the water. Thomas closed out the night saluting a giant nutcracker soldier on the steps.

Day 5Tuesday, June 13, 2017

Stockholm · Junibacken · Skansen · Gamla Stan · Icebar

Cruise Casual · Walt Disney: The Dream Goes On · Standard Rotational (Lumiere's) · Double Crown / Princess Delight

  • Skansen and Swedish Fairytales (SH11) — Disney Cruise Line port adventure, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm: Junibacken and Skansen. Kathy, Grandma, Lisa & Thomas
  • Icebar and Old Town (SH06) — Disney Cruise Line port adventure, noon to 3:00 pm: Old Town walking tour, then the Icebar at the Nordic Sea Hotel. Michael
  • Lumière's — Dinner

Stockholm, Sweden

Making our way to the port of Stockholm. 2 hours until all ashore time.

First evening and day at sea. Character breakfast and formal night. We are loving this cruise. Our dining room serving team is amazing. Other than a brief rain shower yesterday, the weather has been cool (blankets provided on deck) but nice. Today we are off to our first port adventure in Stockholm. Michael is taking on the ice bar. The kids, my mom and I are visiting the children's museum, the Pippi Longstocking house and touring Skansen.

Astrid Lindgren Museum. Time for Pippi Longstocking and friends.

Junibacken, the Astrid Lindgren Museum.

Hot chocolate and soup. 55 degrees, rainy and windy in Stockholm.

Went to check Lisa out of the Oceaneer Lab and she was playing Memory with one of the ship's officers. He knows American Sign Language and was able to bridge the communication gap. This is why I will pay more and why I refuse to cruise with anyone other than DCL. They are always looking out for my kiddos and make them feel so special.

Stalkarazzi autograph hounds. Chip & Dale down. In line for Captain Hook. Beats autographs at the parks any day. It's not 90 degrees and they stop the line after 15 minutes. And yes. It was an epic mom fail. Jack Sparrow page instead of Captain Hook.

Leaving Stockholm. The sun came out. Helsinki, Finland is up next tomorrow morning.

Drink of the Day. I've been throwing down all of the non-alcoholic concoctions. They are fab. #kathysnonboozecruise

Love and hugs from Stockholm. Blue skies!

The Disney Magic called at Stockholm from 8:15 in the morning until 4:45 in the afternoon. Kathy, Grandma, Lisa and Thomas went ashore on the Skansen and Swedish Fairytales port adventure, 9:30 to 2:00. They started at Junibacken, where Thomas and Lisa climbed through the storybook playhouse and posed with a spotted horse, then moved on to Skansen, the open air museum, where they watched a craft demonstration by a lit fireplace and stopped for fresh pastries.

Photo: Gamla Stan, Stockholm, day 5

I took the Icebar and Old Town port adventure at noon, a walking tour through Gamla Stan past the Royal Palace and down the cobblestone streets to a colorful old square, then on to the Icebar at the Nordic Sea Hotel, bundled into a loaner parka among the ice sculptures.

Sailing into Stockholm
Sailing into Stockholm

We were all back aboard by mid afternoon for hot chocolate and soup on deck, and the ship pulled out of Stockholm that evening, sailing slowly through the islands of the archipelago in the sun. That evening was Cruise Casual: a family portrait on the grand staircase, character photos with Goofy, Captain Hook, Chip and Dale and Minnie Mouse in a Swedish dress, then dinner. Thomas and Lisa came away with autograph books signed by Chip and Dale. We ended the day out on deck, watching the sun go down over the water as the ship sailed on.

Day 6Wednesday, June 14, 2017

Helsinki · Temppeliaukio Church · Savijarvi Homestead & Horse Farm · Porvoo Old Town

Optional Dress Up · Tangled: The Musical · Animator's Palate Animation Night · Golden Breeze / Purple Basil Lemonade

  • Helsinki, Porvoo & Countryside (HE03) — Disney Cruise Line port adventure, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm: Old Town Porvoo, lunch at a Sipoo horse farm, Helsinki highlights

Helsinki, Finland

Love from Helsinki. Ready for our port adventure to Porvoo.

Tour group #7 today. Follow the leader holding the #7 paddle. Another reason why we cruise with Disney. All of the thought and planning has been done for me. They speak my organizational language. I gather up the family and go.

It's sunny in Helsinki! Wahoo!

The Rock Church

Lunch at Savijarvi Manor with the horses. The Elderflower welcome juice got a thumbs down from the kids but they tried it and that's all I ask from them.

Mixed reactions to the stinging nettle soup. I give it a thumbs up. The kids said it was spicy.

He gives strawberry cake and rhubarb with caramel sauce two thumbs up.

Rennhack Travel Hack tip. Gallon-size Ziploc bags with granola bars, Teddy Grahams and crackers with peanut butter in your Mama Survival Backpack. Yes, the MSB is your best friend when traveling with young folks. Trust me. You'll be eternally grateful for these rations. Cranky, hangry kids are no fun. Fish casserole and nettle soup for lunch were not winners but knowing that there were comfort goodies back on the bus kept their behavior impeccable. Winning!

Old Town Porvoo. Now back to Helsinki and the Disney Magic for our 5:30 departure time. Tomorrow we are taking on St. Petersburg, Russia.

Our family photo on Porvoo's riverside path

The Disney Magic called at Helsinki from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Kathy, Lisa, Thomas, Grandma and I went ashore together on the day's port adventure, Helsinki, Porvoo and Countryside, group number 7, running to about 5:00 pm.

Horseback riding across the fields at Savijarvi
Horseback riding across the fields at Savijarvi

We started with the Helsinki highlights, including a stop inside the Rock Church, its walls cut straight into the granite with a copper dome overhead and a pipe organ built into the stone. The bus continued past Market Square on the way out to Savijarvi Homestead and Horse Farm in Sipoo. Horses and ponies were out in the paddocks, one a mare with a young foal, and the group sat down together for lunch in the farmhouse dining room.

Lunch tables set in the farmhouse dining room

From the farm we went on to Old Town Porvoo, walking along the river past the old warehouses and the colored wooden houses. We stopped for a family photo together on the riverside path before the bus brought us back into Helsinki, where we had time to walk Senate Square, past the cathedral and a row of painted animal statues set up around the square. Thomas posed with one of them.

We were back aboard in time for Animation Night at Animator's Palate, where Thomas and the rest of the table each drew their own character on an activity sheet and held them up at dinner.

  • Pushkin & Peterhof: Suburbs of St. Petersburg (SP10) — Disney Cruise Line port adventure, 8:30 am to 6:15 pm: Catherine's Palace, Russian lunch, Peterhof Grand Palace and Lower Gardens, hydrofoil back

Saint Petersburg, Russia

Another early morning. Up at 6:00 for a 7:00 tour of St. Petersburg, Russia. 11 hours of run and gun. Vacationing Rennhack style. #vacationsareforexploringnotrelaxing #youcansleepwhenyouaredead

Taking the hydrofoil from Peterhof palace to downtown St. Petersburg.

Such a beautiful day in Russia. Catherine's Palace, Peterhof, lunch at President Putin's favorite restaurant, a hydrofoil ride and another exceptional dinner service from our dining room team Sammy and Marco. I love rotational dining. You get to experience each of the 3 main dining venues while keeping your same serving team. They rotate with you and get to know your family. So far we've experienced Animator's Palette 3 times and Carioca's and Lumiere's once each. Tomorrow we are back at Carioca's and finish up with Lumiere's on Saturday. DCL has definitely stepped up their food game. The meals have all been amazing.

Back on the ship and admiring the view from Deck 10. St. Petersburg is a very modern, beautiful city.

The Disney Magic called at Saint Petersburg from 8:15 in the morning until 11:30 at night, the longest port day of the cruise. All five of us went ashore together on the SP10 excursion, "Pushkin & Peterhof: Suburbs of St. Petersburg," the former summer residences of the Russian tsars. We met our guide, Lexi, at 7:15 in the Walt Disney Theatre, Deck 4 Forward, tour group 18.

Catherine Palace, Pushkin

Photo: Catherine Palace, Pushkin, day 7

First stop was Catherine Palace in Pushkin. A brass band in dress uniform played outside as we walked up, and inside the state rooms were gold on gold, room after room, ending in the huge gilded Great Hall where our whole group could barely fit. Lisa and Thomas wore matching red shirts for the day. We walked the grounds afterward past the Hermitage Pavilion on its little island in the park.

Lunch was at a log-built restaurant, the kind of place with a carved wooden tower and a folk trio playing accordion and singing while we ate. Our guide, Lexi, called it Putin's favorite restaurant, with a straight face, the same way he told us not to smile going through the checkpoints.

From there we drove on to Peterhof, the Grand Palace above the Gulf of Finland, and down into the Lower Gardens where the long run of gold statues and fountains steps to the water, the Grand Cascade. We got a family photo there with our tour number still in hand.

The ride back to the ship was a high speed boat, a hydrofoil, skimming past the Winter Palace and the rest of the waterfront before we walked back aboard for a very late dinner.

  • Marzipan Workshop (TA15) — Disney Cruise Line port adventure, 12:15 to 4:15 pm: Old Town walking tour and a hands-on marzipan workshop

Tallinn, Estonia

Approaching Tallinn, Estonia. Today's port adventure is marzipan and chocolate-making with a master chocolatier in the Old Town followed by the Frozen deck party with Anna and Elsa tonight.

Estonia.

Painting our marzipan figures. What a fun port adventure! Tallinn is such a great town.

Pizza on Deck 9 after a fun afternoon in Tallinn. The stage at the Goofy Pool is already decorated for Frozen Night, an exclusive show on the Baltic and Norwegian itineraries. It replaces Pirates in the Caribbean on these cruises. We have our Olaf cups ready! The kids also have their Frozen Night appointment at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at 6:00 tonight. A knight and a princess coming right up!

Rennhack Rules for Travel: When the all aboard time is 5:00, have your happy hips onboard by 5:00. Standing on the pier at 5:30 is not OK.

The fairy godmothers in training are working some magic.

The Disney Magic called at Tallinn, from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Before we went ashore we picked up cards for the ship's Chocolate Chase Game, a scavenger hunt with clue cards set out around the ship.

Ashore, All five of us went to Tallinn Old Town. The day's port adventure was the Marzipan Workshop, 12:15 to 4:15 pm: an Old Town walking tour and a hands-on marzipan workshop, where Thomas painted his own marzipan animal. We walked the cobblestone streets past the Old Town's walls and gardens, through the market stalls in the old square, and past the twin towers of the Viru Gate.

Back aboard by five, Lisa and Thomas had their Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique appointment that evening. Lisa came out with an Elsa-style dress and a braid; Thomas came out in a full suit of knight's armor with a shield. They had photos taken with a costumed character in a sailor outfit, then joined the other kids dancing on deck at "Freezing the Night Away," a Frozen-themed party under the ship's funnel screen. The sun was still up over the Baltic past nine that night.

A day at sea aboard the Disney Magic, our last full day of the cruise.

Breakfast in the buffet started the morning, waffles and bacon and a thumbs up from Lisa. Lisa had a princess gathering scheduled in the Lobby Atrium that morning. Through the day the character farewells began, Thomas and Lisa taking photos with Cinderella, Donald and Tiana as the ship photographers worked the halls.

Thomas took part in the kids' club stage show, Friend Ship Rocks, with Minnie Mouse dancing in front of a crowd of kids in yellow shirts. There was a swim in the pool that afternoon and a quiet coffee on deck.

Back in the stateroom we started packing suitcases for tomorrow. Dinner that evening included a steak with roasted vegetables. Grandma stayed up late enough to photograph the ship's forecast screen for Copenhagen the next day.

How can I even put into words how incredible this trip has been? Words cannot adequately describe this truly amazing week. Yes, I get all choked up when I scan off the Disney cruise for the last time each voyage. It never gets easier. So many incredible memories that will last a lifetime and fodder for a blog. Stay tuned.

Some cast members truly make the experience magical. Eddisson from Mickey's Mainsail was one of them. He spoiled the kids rotten with pins and even let Thomas run the register. My kids went into the shop everyday looking for him just to say, "Hi." He even signed their autograph books. We will miss our friend Eddisson!

Happy Father's Day to this awesome guy. We love you to the moon and back and appreciate all of your hard work.

Thomas found his jam at the Copenhagen airport. He has €25 in his budget to spend. We talked about conversion rates and currency. We learn cool stuff on vacation.

The Disney Magic docked back in Copenhagen this morning and we said goodbye to the ship. Kathy, Lisa, Thomas, Grandma and I made our way through the airport for a long wait before the flight, watching the departure board tick over to Reykjavik, flight FI207 on Icelandair.

Iceland! Two days of exploring, whale watching, puffin watching, the blue lagoon and Golden Circle are on deck. Yes, I will need a vacation from my vacation. Run and gun. It's the Rennhack way.

When your "hotel" is not what you expected. Oh boy. This is going to be "fun." Add in an excursion that leaves at 6:30 in the morning. Maybe it will be better after dinner. Please let it get better.

The hotel is looking better after dinner and the kids are digging the giant horse lamp.

We said goodbye to the Disney Magic this morning in Copenhagen after two weeks on the Baltic cruise. Between disembarking and our flight we had a few hours to kill, so we let Thomas pick out a few last things in the airport shops before finding our gate.

We made our way into Reykjavik and found our guesthouse, a small apartment with a life-size horse statue wearing a lamp shade for a head standing in the living room, and a bathroom walled in smooth black pebbles. We dropped the bags and went out to find dinner, walking past a field of lupine on the way. We ate at a restaurant near the guesthouse, then walked past Gamla Bío on the way back before bed.

Reykjavik · Blue Lagoon · Laxnes Horse Farm · Þingvellir National Park · Geysir · Gullfoss

  • Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle Tour — Blue Lagoon in the morning, then Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss

Reykjavik, Iceland

Blue lagoon for the Iceland win. We had an absolute blast and I feel like a puddle of Jello. 100 degrees in the water and a nice silica face mask to detox my travel-funky pores. Now on to the national park, waterfall and lava fields. Whew! Our Iceland adventure is steadily improving.

We found a grocery store! A cart full of snacks, bread, ham and salami. This will go in my travel blog for sure. Iceland on a budget. I feel accomplished!

Pit stop at Laxnes horse farm.

Iceland is simply gorgeous. These two cuties are having a blast.

We were picked up before seven for the Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle tour, walking down through Reykjavik in the early morning while Thomas and Lisa were still half asleep. The bus took almost an hour and a half out through the lava fields to the coast.

Photo: Blue Lagoon, Grindavík, Iceland, day 2

The Blue Lagoon was first. The water was warm and milky blue against the black lava rock, and the kids swam in orange arm bands while steam blew across the surface. Grandma came along too and got some photos of the pools from the walkway before we went in.

We had an hour before the Golden Circle tour and there happened to be a Bonus supermarket right next to the bus depot, so we stocked up on backpack goodies and ate lunch on a picnic bench outside. On the way we stopped at a horse farm and fed the Icelandic horses over the fence.

The river delta at Thingvellir

At Þingvellir we walked the path between the rift walls where the tectonic plates meet, and looked out over the river delta from the top. At Geysir we watched Strokkur send up a plume of steam and water every few minutes. Gullfoss was the last stop, a wide two-tiered waterfall with a full rainbow arcing across the canyon while we were there.

We got back to the guesthouse late. Thomas and Lisa were both asleep on top of the covers before we even got the lights off.

Akurey · Whales of Iceland · Hallgrímskirkja · Reykjavik

  • Puffin Island boat tour — Boat tour to Akurey (Puffin Island) from the Reykjavík old harbour

Akurey, Iceland

We saw whales. Overall, a success despite the weather and waves.

Puffin tour. We've been assured that it will be much calmer than the whale tour.

Could this smile get any bigger? She saw puffins. Lots and lots of puffins. They were everywhere all over Puffin Island. She stood out on the deck in the rain with a pair of binoculars to watch them. Highlight of her entire vacation.

It's warm and we are cold. Time to see some whales on dry land.

Last dinner in Reykjavik. Tomorrow we fly home. The past 2 weeks have flown by. Trip of a lifetime. My heart is full. Cheers!

All of us suited up for the boat tour
All of us suited up for the boat tour

We had a Whales and Puffins tour booked with Special Tours out of the old harbour, five of us including Grandma. They suited us up in bright yellow and orange flotation gear before we boarded, and Thomas got a bright orange life vest for the ride.

Photo: Akurey, Iceland, day 3

The Atlantic was choppy and grey past the harbour mouth. The highlight was Akurey, the puffin island, a green humped rock just off the coast with birds wheeling over the grass and nesting along the cliffs. The boat ride out and back, everyone bundled up against the wind and spray, was its own adventure.

Life-size whale models hanging overhead

Back on shore we walked over to Whales of Iceland, a hall of life-size whale models hanging in a dark, blue-lit room, along with a full sperm whale skeleton on the floor. From there we walked up to Hallgrímskirkja and rode the elevator up the tower for a view over the whole city, the low colorful rooftops laid out below us.

Down in the old town a troll street performer stopped Thomas and Lisa for photos, and the kids rented bikes and rode them up and down the cobblestones while we watched. We had drinks and dinner at Sólon before heading back to the guesthouse for the night.

Reykjavik

  • Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Keflavik International, Reykjavik (KEF) · Iceland
  • Chicago O'Hare (ORD) · United States

KEF → ORD

The binder is a bit thicker than it was 2 weeks ago. Blog and Shutterfly fodder right here. The kids have given me marching orders to create "the most epic memory book ever." I'm on it! I can deliver epic.

Nothing screams Summer Vacation like a pair of Italy gloves purchased at the grocery store in Reykjavik, Iceland. That about sums up the last 3 days. Cold, rainy and totally awesome! Would I do it all again? Yes! A million times, yes! I love these people who I am so fortunate to call my tribe. The incredible memories we created will last a lifetime. I hope my kids will forever find joy in the journey, no matter where life takes them. The world is a pretty amazing place and it's meant to be explored. May the travel bug keep on biting!

Bags are packed. 3 hours until the shuttle comes to take us to the airport. Europe, it's been fabulous. I'll miss you. Until next time...

Last breakfast in Iceland. Dunkin Donuts.

Definitely a highlight of our apartment living. The life-size horse lamp. The wall behind us is distressed concrete. Not our design style but super cool if you are into funky, trendy loft stuff. The apartment ended up being a great investment and we enjoyed it very much.

Picking out donuts before we leave
Picking out donuts before we leave

Last morning in Reykjavik. We packed up the suitcases in the green apartment one more time under the horse lamp, then walked out for donuts before heading to the airport, coming back with a box of them for the road.

We took one more photo with the horse statue before checking out, then hauled the bags out to the street for the ride to Keflavik. At the airport we had lunch and let Thomas and Lisa dig into a plate of pasta and a bowl of cereal while we waited for our gate.

Icelandair flight FI853 boarded at quarter to five for the direct flight to Chicago. Thomas and Lisa worked through their Little Explorers activity books on the way, and we watched our route trace up over Greenland and down through Canada on the seatback map. We landed at O'Hare that evening and headed for home.
