Mackinac Island, Michigan

Kathy, Lisa and I set out for Mackinaw City, arriving in the afternoon. We walked out past the old lighthouse at the tip of the point, with the Mackinac Bridge stretched out across the water, and spent a while on the rocky beach with the bridge in the background.

Downtown was decorated for Halloween, skeletons and scarecrows in the shop windows and a giant Bumblebee statue on the corner. We walked the row of fudge and gift shops before dinner, where Lisa signed I love you at the table. We stayed at Mackinaw City that night.

The day was spent at Mackinac Island. We took the early Shepler's ferry over from Mackinaw City, out past the harbor as the sun came up. No cars are allowed on the island, so a horse-drawn carriage took us up through the woods to Arch Rock, the natural limestone arch on the island's bluff.

From there we walked to Fort Mackinac, up on the hill above downtown, and spent the late morning in the fort's museum rooms and overlooks, with a cannon-crew demonstration by reenactors in period uniform. Lisa jumped in a pile of leaves outside the fort. In the afternoon we walked Main Street and the shoreline before catching the ferry back to Mackinaw City in the evening and driving home.
