We woke up to a heavy snow in Coloma, the mailbox and yard ornaments buried and the driveway drifted over. We packed the car and headed for Detroit anyway.

Our Spirit Airlines flight left DTW from Gate D11, the plane sitting out on a snow-covered ramp with crews working around it. We landed in Orlando that evening and picked up our bags.

We checked into the Hyatt Regency, right inside the airport's main terminal, for the night, then found an indoor spot with character statues: Mickey, Goofy, Snow White, SpongeBob and Spider-Man, and posed with all of them. Thomas came away with a new book. We would head to Port Canaveral the next morning to board the Disney Magic.

Port Canaveral

Standard Rotational (Animator's Palate)

Orlando International (MCO)

We left for Port Canaveral by way of Orlando International, where we waited for the Disney Cruise Line bus. Thomas wore his keepsake captain's hat and fell asleep on my lap before the bus came, and we boarded it a little after nine.

At the cruise terminal the Disney Magic was waiting at the dock, our luggage already loaded onto the carts below. We walked in through the archway shaped like Mickey's ears and had our first portraits taken by the ship's photographer, the kids in their matching orange shirts.

Once aboard we found the Oceaneer's Club, with its own Toy Story room, a pirate map table, and a Marvel corner where Thomas played the Avengers Academy game on a tablet. After lunch we headed for the pool deck, and I got in the water with Lisa and Thomas in their swim vests.

By late afternoon the ship was ready to sail. The crew put on a sail-away party on deck, the Adventures Away screen lit up over the pool and streamers going everywhere, and Lisa danced with a red one right in the middle of it.

We spent the evening wandering the atrium and its staircase before dinner at Animator's Palate, where the walls changed with animated drawings while we ate. Thomas and Lisa leaned in for a photo with me before the scallops came out.

We walked through the resort past the lagoon and the pink towers, then into the Predator Lagoon tunnel, where fish swam past overhead and a diver worked in the tank. Lisa signed "I love you" for the camera by the Lost Children sign. We stopped at the Shark Bites Grille for drinks in Atlantis cups, then put on life vests and snorkeled in the lagoon together, fooling around on the railings along the way.

🎭 Aboard the Disney Magic

Back aboard that afternoon, the kids met Captain Mickey and Minnie Mouse in their matching orange shirts. As the sun went down we watched the Disney Magic pull out through the Nassau channel, passing another cruise ship on its way out.

🎭 Formal Night

That evening the family dressed up for optional dress up night. The ship's photographer caught us in a few spots around the ship, and we had a family portrait taken on the grand staircase by the ship's wheel. At dinner I raised a toast with a napkin folded on my head.

Castaway Cay, Bahamas

The four of us by the Disney Magic before we left

We woke to the Disney Magic already tied up at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Bahamas. Kathy had her camera out early, catching the ship at the dock and the painted signs for the post office, Scuttle's Cove and Marge's Barges before we even reached the beach.

Lisa and Thomas spent the morning at the water's edge, digging with a driftwood log and their blue Mickey-shaped buckets and building a sandcastle at the waterline. Thomas wore his snorkel mask most of the morning. Kathy waded out with them a few times in her pink swimsuit, camera around her neck between shots.

We stopped at Scuttle's Cove, where Thomas had an ice cream cone at the picnic tables, and posed by the rocks painted like Mickey and Donald near the path. Minnie Mouse was out on the beach, and we got a family photo with her, along with the ship photographer's portrait by the pier.

By early afternoon we were back aboard and the ship pulled away from the island. We watched Castaway Cay from the upper deck as the tenders and a couple of sailboats came in behind us, the beach and the lighthouse-topped tower shrinking astern.

That evening was Pirate Night. Thomas had on his skull-and-crossbones shirt, Lisa wore a pirate hat, and I tied on a red bandana for dinner at Carioca's. We had portraits taken in pirate gear, with Mickey and Minnie done up as pirates too, and the dining room staff came through in costume, dancing between the tables before dessert.

We woke up still at sea, with no land anywhere in sight. Lisa was up early, all smiles in the cabin, before the four of us spent late morning together in the ship's pool.

In the afternoon we ran into several costumed characters for photos. Thomas met Captain America, and Lisa and Thomas together met Stitch. Lisa took part in a Friendship Rocks kids' club show in the ship's theater, then came out afterward in her yellow show shirt and a paper crown.

The sky stayed grey and cloudy the whole day, the ocean flat and empty. Back in the cabin that night, Thomas ended up clowning around upside down on the couch.

The Disney Magic docked at Port Canaveral and we said goodbye to the ship, Thomas already dressed for travel day in his Spider-Man shirt as we waited for the Disney Cruise Line transfer bus.

We drove to Orlando and spent a rainy morning at the airport, Lisa and Thomas passing the time with their tablets and a snack before we boarded. From Orlando we flew to Detroit, then drove the rest of the way home.
