We flew Spirit out of Detroit at 4:20 that afternoon, headed for Orlando, the first leg of a day that was really two flights: Detroit to Orlando, then Orlando to San Juan.

In Orlando we had a long layover between flights, enough time to walk through the Magic of Disney store and stop for photos with the droids and stormtroopers near the gates.

The second flight left that evening and flew overnight to San Juan, landing after midnight, where we would stay before boarding the ship.

San Juan

Cruise Casual · The Edge Effect · Standard Rotational (Tiana's Place) · Paradise Punch / Espresso Chiller

  • Tiana's Place — Dinner

San Juan, Puerto Rico

This hotel earns a spot on my "definitely recommends" list. It is clean, comfortable and offers complimentary breakfast. The best part? It's attached to the airport. Perfect for those flights that land at 3:00 a.m. We were in bed 40 minutes after wheels down. It's not Hyatt or Hilton fancy but it hit the spot after a long day of travel. Two thumbs up.

A little tired but they were good sports about re-creating our traditional San Juan airport photo. I think someone stole my babies and left these grown-ups in their place.

We're coming for you, Mickey!

The red Disney sticker confirming we have not been to China. I appreciate the diligence.

Let's do this!

Lisa's remake of the old Coke commercial. "I'd like to teach the world to sign in perfect harmony." My heart!

Our seats for the Super Bowl. Sunny and 87 degrees.

Cruise Director Ashley says we are officially on vacation! It's a good, good, good, good time.

Photo: San Juan, Puerto Rico, day 2

We landed in San Juan a little after two in the morning, the last leg of an overnight flight, and by nine we were back at the terminal in the embarkation shirts I designed for this trip: a route map from San Juan to Castaway Cay to New Orleans, with the ASL sign for I love you worked into the design. It was our thirteenth Disney cruise.

Check-in included a boarding health questionnaire for stateroom 7035, and Thomas saluted a Captain Mickey cutout while we waited in line. Once we were aboard the Wonder, Lisa and Thomas looked through the kids' clubs, and we found a note from Kristina, the entertainment activities manager, inviting us to meet about the ASL interpreters we had requested for the voyage.

We were up on deck for the Sail-A-Wave party as the ship pulled away from San Juan that afternoon. At dinner the dessert card read Kahlua creme brulee with cinnamon shortbread cookies. Back in the stateroom, we found it decorated for Thomas's birthday, streamers and a banner up, and a cupcake with his name on it came out at dinner too. In the shops that evening, Thomas had his portrait taken with a cast member named Eddisson, in a shirt that read I can't keep calm, Eddisson is on the ship.

Day at Sea

Lisa was first in line for the red carpet interview on Golden Mickey night. Her confidence is magical.

All four of us for our formal night portrait

Our first full day at sea was an easy one. We watched the ocean go by from the ship's windows over coffee, and Lisa and Thomas traded pins with one of the cast members and posed for a photo with a ship's officer in his dress whites. Thomas sat for a round of studio portraits with the ship photographer, then went swimming in the pool with the other kids. Later he and Lisa stretched out in deck chairs, and I got a latte with a Mickey drawn in the foam.

The printed schedule called the evening cruise casual, but we dressed up anyway. Thomas wore his tux and Lisa a black lace dress with a fur shawl for The Golden Mickeys show, and we had our photos taken together, once against the ship photographer's backdrop and again on the grand staircase. Dinner was at Animator's Palate. Walking back past the Golden Mickeys banners outside the Walt Disney Theatre, the show already over, we found the room turned down for the night with a towel animal waiting on the bed.

Castaway Cay

Pirate or Cruise Casual · Frozen II, Pirates IN The Caribbean Deck Party · Pirate Night · Sunken Treasure / Parrot Sing

  • Animator's Palate — Dinner

Castaway Cay, Bahamas

The whole Merchandise team was well-prepared for the arrival of Eddisson's family. There were hugs. Lots of hugs. Lisa crossed out the BINGO square that said, "Hug Eddisson one time" and re-wrote it as, "Hug more."

Greetings from sunny and beautiful Castaway Cay. First up, three of us are doing the 5K.

Sunny and 75 degrees. A perfect beach day.

Cruise calories don't count. The food in the three main dining rooms is so good that we won't be using our Palo reservation.

I have pool kids, not beach kids. The water was too cold so the three of us are heading back to the ship to swim in the heated pool. Michael is going to Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach.

Be still my heart. A beautiful walk back to the ship with Mischa from the Merchandise team.

The Disney Wonder called at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Bahamas, first thing this morning. We walked off the ship past the welcome sign with the ship docked behind us, all four of us in our red Disney Cruise Line 5K shirts, bibs 25664, 25666, 25668 and 25686 pinned on.

After the run we headed for the water play structure, sliding down into the shallows and splashing around. Lisa and Thomas sat together on the beach, and I got an ice cream from one of the stands. We spent the rest of the morning on the sand before heading back to the ship.

That evening was Pirate Night. The Personal Navigator called for pirate or cruise casual, so we all put on matching red Pirates in the Caribbean shirts with skull and crossbones and red bandanas. We met Captain Jack Sparrow, then Captain Hook and Mr Smee, and had our photos taken on the ship's pirate-themed backdrops. Dinner that night was in Animator's Palate.

The Navigator said Optional Dress Up for the evening, so we went with it. In the morning Lisa traced and colored a mermaid self-portrait for a window cling, and drew a matching picture with Eddisson from the shops. The route map on the TV screens showed 1037 nautical miles sailed so far. Lisa had a hot dog and fries by the pool, and I had a few solo portraits taken before Kathy and I stood for one together.

That evening the kids traded pins with the ship's officers and came away with Honourary Pin Trader certificates, photographed with the group of them in dress whites outside the Walt Disney Theatre. We had the whole family photographed together before dinner at Tiana's Place, where the kids posed with costumed characters and we finished with beignets. Turndown left a towel animal and chocolates waiting on the bed.

Our last full day at sea, and a rough one. The ship rolled through rain and big swells most of the morning, and the pool deck sat empty under its movie screen. Lisa spent craft time at the Craft Studio, tracing and coloring two Disney princess pages, then wore a pink cat-ear hat to dinner that night. Thomas met Fancy Nancy for a photo, and later Goofy stopped by too. We goofed around with arms up in a hallway before dinner, and had ice cream sundaes for dessert.

That evening we picked up the Magical Moments certificates from the pin trading and the family portrait team, and said goodbye with hugs to several of the crew who had looked after us all week, ahead of reaching New Orleans in the morning.

New Orleans

New Orleans → DTW

🎭 Aboard the Disney Wonder

The best team on the ship. Merch Rocks!

Honorary pin traders.

Good morning from sunny and chilly New Orleans. The first time a Disney ship has docked here.

The Gulf was angry yesterday.

Well done New Orleans. Your new airport terminal is beautiful.

Mac and cheese every single night per the usual. I did bribe them with trading pins and a BINGO board square to get them to try something from the adult menu. Cookies and cream sundaes were a hit.

I can't express how thankful I am for these two amazing ladies. They did a fabulous job interpreting the events and shows for Lisa. We have had the privilege of sailing with Meagan and Kara on two cruises for a total of 19 nights. Lisa had saved up 15 months worth of hugs for them this time around

Me: "I can't wait to eat a Po Boy for lunch." Also me: "$20 for a sandwich? Kathy's Travel Math suggests a hard pass. I'll take the $4.25 pretzel at Auntie Anne's for the win."

The cold and snow of Michigan. Take me back to Castaway Cay.

The Disney Wonder was already docked at New Orleans at sunrise, the skyline lit up past the bridge as the sun came up over the river. We had breakfast on board, then disembarked and made our way through the New Orleans airport with the kids that morning.
