Mackinac Island

Heading to the island for the long weekend.

Kathy and I set out for Mackinac Island, packing the van and driving north. We caught the ferry over to the island in the afternoon, watching the town and the marina come into view from the water. On Main Street we stopped for ice cream before finding our balcony view of the harbor.

The evening ended on the boardwalk, watching the sun go down over the water.

A full day of touring the island. Kathy and I took a horse-drawn carriage tour, since no cars are allowed on Mackinac Island, and passed the Grand Hotel, stopping to see its famous front porch and the pool overlooking the lake.

From there we climbed to Fort Holmes, the highest point on the island, then walked out to Arch Rock, the natural stone arch above the water. The carriage tour continued past the island's summer cottages before the day ended with dinner at the Greens with friends.

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island, MI

Just a Townie girl, living in a Trek world. Whew. Those bikes are stiff and uncomfortable. Another 8-mile loop around the island is in the books. It's a great day for photos, fudge and walking. Tonight we are taking a Sip & Sail cruise on Lake Huron to watch the fireworks in St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.

The day was spent at Mackinac Island. In the morning Kathy and I walked past the old fort's cannons overlooking the strait. In the evening we found a wild rabbit along the garden path on their way to an evening boat cruise, then watched the sun go down over the water. The cruise carried us past the Grand Hotel lit up on the bluff and out to where the Mackinac Bridge glowed in the distance.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

A perfect way to spend a Sunday before heading home

Our last morning on the island we took Sip n' Sail's "Easy Like Sunday Morning" cruise, a perfect way to spend a Sunday before heading home.

The captain took us out on an easy, slow cruise with smooth music playing, and we just sat back and relaxed. Along the way we passed Arch Rock, British Landing and the West Bluff shoreline, then the Grand Hotel, before coming back into Mackinac Island Harbor.

Good drinks, great views, and nothing to do but enjoy it. A great last memory of Mackinac Island.
