Not a bad view from our stateroom balcony.

We spent the last morning at the hotel packing up, with the city towers and palm trees out the window. Lisa wheeled her suitcase down to a bench on the street while we got ready to head for Circular Quay.

The Disney Wonder was already at the dock, black hull and gold scrollwork, with the Opera House right behind it. We took turns getting photos in front of the ship, walked past a coffee truck and under a Bon Voyage sign, and the ship photographer caught the three of us together just after we came aboard. Our home for the next two weeks was stateroom 6074, a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with a Navigator's Verandah.

I worked the soft-serve machine at Eye Scream for a round of ice cream cones. This was our 22nd Disney cruise, and its 15 nights would bring us to 158 nights with Disney Cruise Line. A note was waiting in the stateroom asking us to meet the Entertainment Team and the ASL interpreters at the Atrium at 3:00pm, and that evening Lisa filled out request forms for ASL interpretation at several of the week's shows and activities. Our balcony looked straight across the water at the Opera House. I designed shirts for the trip again: Bluey and Bingo with the Opera House and the Wonder on the front, our route from Sydney to Honolulu, and all 22 of our Disney cruises listed on the back.

We spent a long stretch of the afternoon out on deck under the Harbour Bridge and across from the Opera House, then had dinner at Tiana's Place before the ship left the dock.

The light was gold as we sailed past the Opera House, and Mickey's Sail-A-Wave Party filled the deck with music while Sydney slipped by. We watched the city turn to a dark shape against the sunset as the ship passed through the Heads, and ended the night on the balcony with a toast, Lisa and I signing I love you before we turned in.

Day at Sea

This is, without a doubt, the most gorgeous sail-out city. Stay spectacular, Sydney. It's not, "Goodbye." It's, "Until we meet again." I'll see you in 110 days.

For our D/HH friends. A little snippet of yesterday's Sail A Wave party. The ASL interpreters are fabulous as always. Did you know that you can request interpreters for any sailing that departs from or arrives into a U.S. port? Since we are sailing from Sydney to Honolulu, I was able to get this service for Lisa.

Today's office view from the French Quarter Lounge on Deck 3. No complaints. It's a lovely sea day. Perfect for sipping coffee and booking client trips.

I did get a question about onboard internet. There are two packages on Disney Cruise Line. The first is designed for checking e-mail, browsing and posting on social media. It is $26/device/day. The second will support streaming and more bandwidth-intensive activities at $42/device/day. For our sailing party of three with one device each, I went with the lower package. It is definitely spendy on a 15-night voyage. Here are the speed test results. Is it "worth it?" That depends upon your needs. I need to keep in contact with clients who are traveling and those who want to book trips. I have done a few Facebook Messenger calls with Thomas as well. It's not fast, but it meets my needs.

We spent the day at sea between Sydney and Nouméa. Kathy and I started slow with coffee from Cove Café, mine drawn as Black Panther in the foam, and lounge chairs on deck. Lisa went to a napkin folding demonstration in the afternoon.

Another day at sea, this one clear enough for a sunrise Lisa caught through the balcony door. Coffee came with Mickey and Minnie drawn in the foam. Lisa went to an animation drawing class and came away with a sketch of Nick Wilde, then we lined up for the Royal Gathering and she met Ariel and Belle.

After lunch I took a turn at Chip It Golf in the atrium while Lisa watched, and we spent the afternoon lounging on the top deck with drinks. Dinner was at Animator's Palate, capped with an ice cream sundae. That night Lisa filled out another ASL interpreter request form for the next day's activities.

Nouméa · Aquarium des Lagons · Ouen Toro Lookout · Notre-Dame du Pacifique

The Emperor's New Game Show · Standard Rotational (Tiana's Place)

  • Best of Noumea (NOU02) — Disney Cruise Line port adventure, meet 8:45 am in Azure, Deck 3 Forward, about 3 hours 15 minutes; operated by Noumea Discovery Travel Company

Nouméa, New Caledonia

Land ho! Today we are off the ship for a short Port Adventure in Noumea, New Caledonia. It is much-needed after yesterday's rockin' and rollin' experience. In 22 Disney cruises, I have never experienced waves like that. We were sailing through a tropical depression and the Pacific Ocean was mighty angry. We are currently docking in Noumea under very cloudy skies and calm, flat seas. Here's to checking country/territory #44 off my list.

Photo: Nouméa, New Caledonia, day 4

The Wonder came into Nouméa early, New Caledonia's coast grey under low cloud, cargo ships and red-earth hills sliding past while we had breakfast on board.

Photo: Aquarium des Lagons, Nouméa, day 4

We had booked Disney's Best of Nouméa tour, so we met our group in Azure on Deck 3 at a quarter to nine and rode out along the bays, past the container yard and into town, to Aquarium des Lagons around nine. We stayed a long time there: mangrove crabs, seahorses tucked in coral, a tank of jellyfish drifting under blue light, a diver hand-feeding fish in the big reef tank. Lisa laid out a little mosaic of sea glass she found on a table outside. In the open-air lagoon out back we watched green turtles and reef sharks swim right past the glass.

Photo: Ouen Toro Lookout, Nouméa, day 4

From the aquarium we climbed to Ouen Toro, where paragliders were launching off the ridge and two old coastal guns still point out over the bay. Lisa and I signed I love you for a photo with the harbour behind them.

Photo: Notre-Dame du Pacifique, Nouméa, day 4

We walked on to Notre-Dame du Pacifique, the twin-towered church on its own hill, with a grotto of Stations of the Cross and a shrine to Mary looking down over the Wonder in port.

Back aboard for a curry at lunch, then an afternoon by the pool before we sailed. Kathy found a towel animal on the bed. We had asked the ship for ASL interpreting at Lisa's onboard activities that day, including the evening's Emperor's New Game Show. Dinner was at Tiana's Place, where Lisa posed with a frog. We met Mickey Mouse and the Captain before the show.

Day at Sea

Standard Rotational (Triton's)

  • Day at Sea

Dinner at Tiana's Place did not disappoint. Lisa had steak and liked it! No more mac and cheese every night for this girl.

Yesterday we did a Best of Noumea tour. One thing I have discovered over the past 27 cruises is the more I cruise, the less I enjoy bus tours. This was an OK experience. We went to the very small aquarium, a lookout point and a religious monument. There wasn't time to stop for a magnet and post card, which is something we do in every new port. Our tour guide was from Philadelphia and could have used a bit of coaching on using phrases like, "Um yeah whatever" and "something like that." I didn't feel particularly confident that the information she was delivering was 100% accurate. It was an opportunity to get off the ship and see a few sights, so I'll take that as a win.

Sitting in the French Quarter Lounge enjoying morning happy hour. Beignets and a caramel latte while Lisa participates in coloring time. If it's artsy, count her in.

Another sea day without the pools. The waterslide is open. We are going to rock and roll this ship all the way to tomorrow's stop in Fiji. I'm going to keep booking client trips from my perch in the French Quarter Lounge.

The longest line on the ship is for Bluey and Bingo. The first person in line was here 2 hours before their scheduled time.

Photo: Day at Sea, day 5

The ship celebrated my birthday today. Guest Services left a note and a Magical Moments certificate for me, along with a birthday pin, and breakfast came with warm sugared doughnuts and a Mickey-shaped latte. Lisa sat at her own table coloring while Kathy and I ate.

We spent the late morning finding character photos. Kathy and I posed with Black Panther near the Disney Theater, and later with Bluey and Bingo. For lunch we had cones from the Eye Scream stand and a burger with fries.

In the afternoon we checked a screen for the crew pin trading schedule and browsed the Disney Cruise Line shirts in the shops. That evening the ship's photographer gave Bob, Lisa's stuffed husky, his own portrait session with her.

We had dinner at Triton's. Lisa and I had our photo taken there and she signed I love you for the camera. The dining room sent out a dessert with a small Happy Birthday card tucked beside it. Afterward, Kathy and Lisa had their picture taken with the ship's senior officers in the atrium.

Housekeeping had made up our room with a heart folded from swan towels, a rose, and a card from the Captain, officers and crew wishing us a happy Valentine's Day. Before bed, Lisa filled out the request form for ASL interpreters at tomorrow's Generation Quest event and the pajama party.

Suva · Pacific Harbour · Reef Snorkel · Lagoon Resort

Standard Rotational (Animator's Palate)

  • Animator's Palate — Dinner

Suva, Fiji

Another stellar dinner. Tonight we were at Triton's.

Today is a short, 6-hour stop in Suva, Fiji. I had planned to join Michael and Lisa on a snorkeling excursion, but after the past few days of rough seas, I need a rendezvous with terra firma. I don't do particularly well with small boats and an enjoyable day in Suva sounds like the perfect way to spend today. I'll take the free shuttle into town and explore a bit.

Tonight is the World PremEar of the newest Captain America movie. I'm sure Michael will be at the 8:00 p.m. showing. I'm not a Marvel person and that's past my bedtime.

Decaf caramel latte for the morning win. Happy Saturday!

The islands of Fiji are on the horizon!

Postcard Fiji vs. Suva, Fiji. The nearest beach is a 90-minute drive each way. As Cruise Director Jimmy reminded us this morning, "It's a cultural experience, like Nassau." Beware of overly aggressive vendors. OK then. Let's see where this adventure takes us. I just need a magnet and postcard.

I hope Michael and Lisa enjoy their very long bus ride and 30 minutes of snorkeling. Thankfully they have their passports because this is not a Disney-sponsored tour and all-aboard is in 4.5 hours.

Life is an adventure and there is always a positive to be found in every situation. My positive is enjoying a very empty ship. This is an industrial port, so the supply chain geek in me is content to watch shipping containers being shuffled around while sipping a cup of Lift from the soda dispenser.

Morning latte at Cove Cafe on the Wonder

We spent the morning at sea, watching the Fiji coast slide into view from the deck, and had a swim in the pool while the Wonder eased into Suva around midday. There was a coffee with a mermaid drawn in the foam.

Photo: Suva, Fiji, day 6

Kathy stayed near the port to look around Suva, while Lisa and I set off on a tour we had booked on our own, not through Disney. We drove out past Suva's waterfront market and a hillside cemetery, along a river and through green cattle country to Pacific Harbour, then went out by boat to snorkel. The reef was covered in staghorn and plate coral, full of blue and yellow fish, and we even found a crown-of-thorns starfish on one of the coral heads.

The boat brought us back to the dock at Pacific Harbour, and we walked over to Lagoon Resort. The staff welcomed us in, I found the pool with a hibiscus flower tucked behind my ear, and we had a snack looking over the gardens. Because it was not a ship's excursion, I was nervous the whole way back that we would not make it to the ship in time. We made it.

Dinner on the ship was a beet and goat cheese starter, scallops with pea risotto, a soup, and lobster tail with asparagus. Afterward we met Goofy and Pluto in the atrium, then Mickey in his captain's uniform with Donald, posed with a Captain America shield, and had our pictures drawn among the Disney villain sketches on the wall. Lisa filled out her ASL interpreter request forms for the days ahead: Bingo, the boat building bash, an ice cream social, learning to draw Captain Hook.

International Date Line

The best meal so far. The banana bread sundae did not disappoint.

Morning Happy Hour with my girl. Beignets to share, hot cocoa for her and a decaf caramel latte for me. Then on to a photo scavenger hunt.

Transitioning to adulthood and self-advocacy has been a journey. We used to pick activities and fill out the interpreter request forms for Lisa. For the past few years, we have transitioned the responsibility to her. Now she does it all on her own. Forms need to be completed and turned in to Guest Services by 7 p.m. for the following day. This means going through the app and reviewing the next day's activities.

Today we cross the International Date Line, so tomorrow will be February 16th again. Lisa has already said that she wants a swimming day with nothing else planned. She has been going hard since we landed in Sydney 8 days ago. I get tired just reading her interpreter request forms. Whew!

If you've ever wondered what there is to do on a Disney sea day, here are some insights. 1820 Society is a group just for 18 to 20-year-olds. They meet at least once a day for ice cream, games, trivia and other activities.

Tonight was dinner at Palo, the adults-only specialty restaurant on the Disney Wonder. As Platinum Castaway Club members, we receive one complimentary dinner or brunch at Palo on each cruise. Lisa branched out and tried the bean soup and pizza with arugula. Both received a solid OK rating. She ordered the chocolate souffle, but had to leave for the "So You Want to Be a Pirate" event before it arrived. I ate it for her and it was so good.

Coincidentally, our Palo reservation coincided with Pirate Night in the main dining room. Pirate Night is my least favorite menu, so it worked out perfectly.

Another rainy day at sea. Thankfully there are crafts, characters and plenty of activities to keep us busy. Tomorrow we will be in Pago Pago, American Samoa followed by 5 straight sea days and then Hawaii!

Fair warning for tomorrow's Port Adventure in American Samoa. I'm looking forward to our excursion: The Village Way of Life.

February 16 happened twice for us, the day we crossed the International Date Line. On the first one we started slow, looking out at open water from the cabin window before the pool deck emptied out for the morning. Breakfast came with Disney character art drawn into the coffee foam and a plate of beignets. On the Grand Staircase we met Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Chip and Dale for photos, then found Captain Hook and Mr Smee waiting nearby for more. The afternoon was quiet, open ocean in every direction from the open deck. That evening we dressed up for dinner at Palo, the adults-only Italian restaurant, working through a tomato and cheese starter, bread, soup, gnocchi and a steak before dessert.

🎭 Pirate Night

Pirate Night followed. We put on matching skull shirts and red bandanas, ones I designed for the night with a Mickey-eared skull, and Bob rode along in his own pirate outfit on top of Lisa's bandana. We had our photos taken against the ship's pirate backdrop on the stairs. Up on deck, Pirates IN The Caribbean turned into a party, with a pirate working the crowd and Chip and Dale dancing under colored lights. I kept catching songs I half recognized and looked several up on my phone: Uptown Funk, Livin' on a Prayer, Hit Me with Your Best Shot, a set that ran late into the night.

Then February 16 started again: the clocks had gone back 23 hours overnight, now on American Samoa time. Lisa filled out ASL interpreter request forms for the day's craft activity and a Boat Building Bash check-in. The seas were rougher, visible through the round porthole in our cabin. In between there was a pillowcase-painting craft, Mickey, Donald and Goofy sketched on for later coloring. Dinner that night was built around a menu called Land and Sea. After, we went to the theater for a comedy show, James Bustar, before heading back to the room.

Pago Pago · Fatu-ma-Futi (Flowerpot Rock) · Leone Missionary Monument · Vila's Village

Standard Rotational (Animator's Palate)

  • The Village Way of Life (PPG03) — Disney Cruise Line port adventure, 12:45 to 4:00 pm: open-air island bus to Flowerpot Rock, the Leone Missionary Monument and Vila's Village

Pago Pago, American Samoa

Worlds of Flavor menu at Triton's tonight. One of my favorites and it's only offered on longer cruises.

My office at 5:00 a.m. The French Quarter Lounge has been my productivity space. I miss my 3-monitor setup at home, but the view and ambience of this venue have more than made up for it. I've booked a lot of client trips over the past 8 days with a few more still in the hopper. The husband is not onboard with the idea of making this my permanent view. I hear divorces are ugly, expensive and messy, so back to my home office I shall go in 7 days. Until then, I'm soaking up every last drop of this atmosphere.

Greetings from Pago Pago, American Samoa.

It pretty much rained like this all day. It was cool to see, but not much fun to be out in it. Thankfully, Disney provided us with ponchos.

Our day out in Pago Pago, American Samoa. The weather wasn't very cooperative, but we had a great time learning about the culture and traditions of this U.S. territory. We tried new foods, attended a cultural ceremony and Lisa got her picture taken with a village princess and a police officer.

Photo: Pago Pago, American Samoa, day 8

The Disney Wonder sailed into Pago Pago early, and Kathy's coffee came with Mickey drawn in the foam while the ship worked its way past the container harbor. Once we were ashore, a big blue banner said Talofa, welcome to American Samoa.

Fatu-ma-Futi (Flowerpot Rock)
Fatu-ma-Futi (Flowerpot Rock)

Our port adventure was The Village Way of Life, 12:45 to 4:00 pm: an open-air island bus took us out to Fatu-ma-Futi (Flowerpot Rock), then the Leone Missionary Monument, the old capital of Tutuila where Samoa's first missionary, John Williams, came ashore in 1832, then Vila's Village. It rained hard the whole afternoon and we all had ponchos on for most of it. At Flowerpot Rock we walked the shoreline past an enormous old tree and looked over the rocks at the snails and shells while the rock stack sat out in the water. At Leone, the missionary monument's plaque spoke of healing after the 2009 tsunami. At Vila's Village, under an open pavilion, a couple of men gave a craft demonstration, a table of food was laid out, and dancers in traditional dress performed, one of them a young girl Kathy got a photo with.

Back near the pier, a local posed for a photo with Lisa before we reboarded. As we sailed out the green mountains closed back up around the harbor, and the clocks went forward an hour that night. Lisa filled out her ASL interpreter request form for the next few days' onboard activities. That evening we had dinner, met Bluey and Bingo, then Mickey and Donald in their sailor outfits, and Captain Hook and Mr. Smee, and had our portraits taken out on deck under a painted moon.

Day at Sea

Semi-Formal · Frozen (deck movie) · Standard Rotational (Animator's Palate) · Cool Breeze / Crazy Shake

  • Day at Sea

Another stellar dinner. Lisa wasn't interested in tonight's selections and asked if they could make her a grilled cheese sandwich. Of course they could. Mickey's chefs aim to please.

Current view from my deck chair. Zero complaints. Tomorrow we cross the Equator.

Another full day at sea, this one built around getting dressed up. Kathy's coffee arrived with hearts drawn in the foam to start the morning. Mid-morning the character line was going in the atrium: Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Chip and Dale together for one big family photo, and later Lisa got her own turns with Woody and Jessie in the Toy Story room and at the Marvel wall with Wanda and Groot.

I spent part of the afternoon flat on a deck lounger doing nothing at all. That evening we ate at Animator's Palate, its murals shifting color through the meal, working through a beet salad, seared fish, a steak, and a chocolate dessert. Afterward we lined up for family portraits in front of a snow-forest backdrop, ran into Tiana in her green gown in the atrium, and the character line kept going: Mickey, Minnie and Donald in sailor whites, then Pluto, Chip 'n' Dale and Goofy for another round of photos. Later we caught Frozen playing on the pool deck screen.

Kathy watched the sunset from the rail before we turned in. Late that night Lisa filled out the ship's form requesting ASL interpreters for Bluey, crew pin trading and Four Square the next day, and for an ice cream social later in the cruise.

Crossing the Equator

King Triton's Royal Trial of Equatorial Passage, Crossing the Equator Countdown Party · Standard Rotational (Tiana's Place)

  • Crossing the Equator
  • Crossing the Equator Countdown Party

Crossing the Equator

My favorite menu. Frozen. The white chocolate floro dome is so good. Lisa tried the juniper-marinated pork tenderloin and said it was OK. She's a tough critic. The chef makes something special for Michael each night due to his egg allergy. Tonight it was a chocolate cake with fresh berries. Nobody handles food allergies like Disney. Dairy, gluten, nuts, shellfish. They handle everything.

There's something surreal about stumbling upon your world looking out at their world. For the past 13 years, she has grown up on Mickey's ships. From a 6-year-old little girl who could barely see over the railing to a 19-year-old young woman gazing out at the horizon with unbridled confidence. As she stands at the precipice of independence, I step back and beam with pride. The world is yours Lisa Nicole Rennhack and I cannot wait to see where it takes you.

It's Equator Crossing Day and the festivities will be plentiful. Throw in Crew Pin Trading and another chance to meet Bluey and Bingo and you've got one heck of a party at sea. As of this evening, we will no longer be Pollywogs. We will be Shellbacks!

Another beautiful day at sea. Payback for the rain, wind and crazy motion in the ocean earlier in our trip. Sunny and in the 80s. Let's take this all the way to Hawaii. Three more sea days until we reach Kauai on Sunday.

Tiana & Lisa on Crossing the Equator day
Tiana & Lisa on Crossing the Equator day

Today we crossed the equator. The pool deck sign made it official around midday: King Triton's Royal Trial of Equatorial Passage. Kathy came back later with a certificate for swimming the line.

Lisa had put in a request the night before for ASL interpreters at a couple of today's events, Bluey and Bingo at one o'clock and crew pin trading at half past three. We met Bluey and Bingo on the pool deck stage first, then traded pins with the crew at a counter near the shops. In between we picked up matching shirts and sat for a round of formal portraits, then found Mickey Mouse for one more family photo.

Dinner was at Tiana's Place, where the kitchen sent out a fish course, and the restaurant's own sign lit up the hallway outside afterward. Back in the room, the stateroom host had folded a towel animal next to Bob on the bed.

Photo: Crossing the Equator, day 10

The night ended on the pool deck for the Crossing the Equator Countdown Party, music and characters on stage, Lisa swimming after dark while the rest of us watched, then fireworks over the water and a costumed group jumping straight into the pool to finish it off.

Day at Sea

Standard Rotational (Triton's)

  • Day at Sea

Today's 5:00 a.m. view. This trip has been MUCH less stressful for me. Everyone packed their own bags and they are managing their outfits from the cards I created for each day. I have done a total of 4 loads of laundry. Typically on a 2-week cruise I will do 10-12 loads. I'm still in charge of laundry because you have to get up REALLY early to find an open machine on the classic ships. At 4:55, I was third in line. It's bananas. By 6:00, the line will be out the door with a 1-2 hour wait. That's not magical.

Crush's Totally Awesome Pool Party. I love how Lisa throws herself into all of the activities. She keeps the interpreters hopping.

Photo: Day at Sea, day 11

Another day at sea. We did laundry, then had cappuccinos with foam art and beignets at Cove Cafe. On the pool deck a party called Crush's Totally Awesome Pool Party was going, and we all got photos with Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy, plus a round of ring toss on deck.

In the evening we caught the sunset from the open deck, and the ship photographer took our picture by the railing. Dinner was at Triton's: soup, a fish course, risotto and prime rib, finished with dessert. Afterward we sat for a full portrait session in the photo studio, with backdrops of the moon over the water, a starry curtain and a painted Hawaiian sunset, ending on the grand staircase.

Back in the room a towel dog was waiting on the bed, along with the notice for our Sunday customs inspection in Nawiliwili. In the atrium a guitarist in a lei played, and later two drummers and dancers performed. Lisa filled out her ASL interpreter request for tomorrow: the officers' hide and seek, towel folding, pin trading, the family game show, the soccer challenge and the comedy magician.

I finished the night on deck with a couple of new friends, tossing a glowing ball around by the pool in the dark.

Day at Sea

Standard Rotational (Animator's Palate)

  • Day at Sea

After 22 Disney cruises the process is still a work in progress. This is the first time I have delegated packing to each person. We considered a "wear what you want" approach, but photos look so much better when everyone is coordinated. The outfit cards on the door started out as our packing list and evolved into a daily kanban system. Check the door, assemble your outfit and go.

I am also using our door as a command center. Magnetic hooks are the best pre-cruise purchase. They can be used to hang bags, hats, water bottle holders and clothes. Our room has been much more tidy on this voyage.

Tonight's Hawaiian-themed menu was AWESOME. Longer itineraries offer menus above and beyond the standard fleetwide selections. We are on a 15-night voyage and there are no repeats. Each evening brings a distinctly unique offering. The standout dish for me was the Sauteed Crimini and Oyster Mushrooms. Lisa gave the pork tenderloin and corn chowder two thumbs up.

It's going to be another BUSY day onboard the Disney Wonder. Lisa is living her best life with 1820 Society events, character photos, pool parties, crafts, ukulele lessons and hanging out with all of her cast member friends.

Today is one of her favorite activities: Officer Hide & Seek. Participants meet in the D Lounge where they take a good look at the ship's officers. The officers are then sent off to change clothes and "hide" around the ship. The Cruise Director might be polishing glass in the atrium. The Chief Engineer might be playing cards in the Crown and Fin Pub. Perhaps the Entertainment Manager is working as a lifeguard at the Twist 'N Spout slide. Teams are given 30 minutes to find as many officers as they can. When found, the officer hands the team a card with a point value. Highest point total at the end of 30 minutes wins!

After that, there's Crew Pin Trading which is Lisa's all-time favorite event followed by 1820 Society Game Challenge. 1820 Society is the special group for 18-20-year-olds on the ship. They are too old for youth activities but not old enough to consume alcohol. They do all sorts of fun activities (ice cream socials, games, lunch, karaoke). Lisa has really vibed with this group and they have been so welcoming.

Whew! I need a nap just thinking about today's fun.

My only complaint about attempting to work on the ship is the horrendously slow internet speed between Fiji and Hawaii. I spent 4 hours running quotes this morning, a task I can typically complete in under 20 minutes. At $800 for 15 days of service on 3 devices, I expected a slightly faster speed. Other than that, work life has been great.

Photo: Day at Sea, day 12

Another day at sea, and Lisa had ASL interpretation lined up for most of it. We started with cappuccinos, Ariel drawn in the foam, and a plate of beignets at Cove Cafe. Goofy left Lisa a paper cutout of the sign for I love you, signed and dated, to go with her request for the officers' hide and seek.

That hide and seek ran mid-morning: the officers lined up on a stage with a green backdrop, then guests found them scattered around the ship, some in costume, including one in a banana suit, and we stopped to meet Belle along the way. After that came the Boat Building Bash, where Lisa built a boat and earned a certificate, and we ran into Mickey too. I got my own moment with Donald Duck.

In the afternoon we watched a towel folding demonstration, the shapes going from a simple fold to an elephant. Lisa also had ASL set up for crew pin trading and the evening's Family Time Game Show, Soccer Game Challenge and the Adam Dean comedy magic show.

Dinner brought shrimp and pasta, a salad and a parfait for dessert, and a photo with Rachelle, one of the ship's photographers. Before bed, Lisa filled out the next day's ASL request: the Diaper Dash, napkin folding and a ukulele lesson.

4:00 a.m. view. It keeps getting earlier and earlier. Work brain...ACTIVATE. I need four solid hours of productivity so that I can enjoy the rest of my day.

Race those babies (and dads). Jack Jack's Diaper Dash is always a hoot.

Approaching Hawaii. Enjoying our last of 5 consecutive sea days. Tomorrow we have a 7:45 a.m. appointment with Customs & Border Protection. Typically, a ship will go through this process at the final port. We are in Nawiliwili tomorrow and end our voyage in Honolulu on Monday. Since Nawiliwili is our first American port, the officials come onboard and every single person on the vessel must be present with their passport in hand at the appointed time, whether they plan to go ashore or not. It will make debarkation in Honolulu seem a bit anticlimactic. Grab the luggage and go to the airport.

Our last full sea day before Kauai. Kathy's coffee came with Mickey's face drawn into the foam, and we saw the track for Jack-Jack's Diaper Dash laid out in the atrium below; Lisa had ASL interpretation lined up for it. At noon we watched a napkin folding class, the napkins going from a simple fold to a lily, another activity on Lisa's ASL request.

Midday the atrium turned into a dance party, with Minnie, Daisy, Mickey, Goofy, Chip and Dale out in Hawaiian shirts and dresses, and a crowd packed onto every level of the staircase. Lisa also had ASL set up for a ukulele lesson and for the 1820 Society farewell and game challenge later on.

Dinner brought a seafood course, and Lisa wore her Beignet All Day t-shirt to the table. A rabbit-eared towel animal was waiting in the room, and our pin trading collection was laid out on the table.

That evening we thanked our photographer Ayush with one of our own Rennhack Family Magical Moment cards, the ones I make for each cruise to give the crew who make it special, and traded I love you signs with him. Jenna and Alex were the two ASL interpreters who signed for Lisa most of that week. Lisa had ASL set up for a storytelling session too, and we caught the Crew Talent Show at the Walt Disney Theatre before ending the night with friends under the stage lights.

Greetings from Nawiliwili, Hawaii!

Boooooo. They are kicking us off tomorrow.

Photos don't do it justice. What a beautiful island.

We docked at Nawiliwili on Kauai this morning. We were booked on the Wailua River Cruise and Fern Grotto Tour, a 10 am departure from Deck 3 Forward. We rode out to Wailua River Marina and boarded one of Smith's riverboats for the trip upriver. Lisa signed I love you for a picture on the ride out.

At the Fern Grotto we walked the jungle path past bamboo, red ginger and broad philodendron leaves to the amphitheater, a lava rock wall hung with ferns. A trio of local musicians played and sang there while we looked around. Kathy and Lisa posed together at the grotto entrance, and I got a few pictures of myself among the red ginger.

The boat brought us back to the marina, and from there we drove up to the Wailua Heritage Trail overlook at Opaekaa Falls, with its view down the river valley to the falls. A flock of wild Kauai chickens had the picnic area and parking lot there to themselves.

Back near the ship we had lunch, a burger and fries, and did some shopping in Nawiliwili. That evening we had dinner onboard, served by I Gede Eka, with lobster tail and apple pie a la mode for dessert. Afterward we ran into costumed characters near the elevators, a pirate among them, and stopped for pictures before the Wonder sailed on toward Oahu.

Honolulu, Hawaii

Last dinner onboard the Disney Wonder. We had the BEST dining team over the past 15 days. I will miss them and the incredible food. When people ask which ship in the fleet is my favorite, it is, without a doubt, the Wonder. It has been for years and I don't see that changing. Sure, the Treasure is new, shiny and fabulous. The Wonder has that feeling of family and when I walk through those doors on embarkation day, I know that I am home. It's never, "Goodbye." It's always, "See you real soon."

Aloha from the beautiful port of Honolulu. Today we debark the Disney Wonder and begin our 11-hour journey home. Honolulu to LAX this afternoon and a red-eye from LAX to Chicago that arrives tomorrow morning.

While I am sad to leave, I can't wait to get home and hug Thomas for the first time in 19 days. I've missed him and he might be ready to surrender that adulthood card. Although, he did report enjoying the peace and quiet of an empty house and the freedom to do his own thing, which consisted of recovering from the flu, doing homework and taking care of the dog. Sounds like adulthood to me!

This girl lived her absolute best life over the past 18 days and brought so much joy to the ship. I've had so many crew members and guests tell me how much their interactions with Lisa brightened their day. Three crew members cried during their final goodbyes last night. There have been so many hugs this morning.

Her friends from 1820 Society were the best. They were so patient with Lisa and did not mind the interpreters tagging along. This was the first time that Lisa hung out with 1820 Society members outside of organized activities. She even joined their WhatsApp group to keep in touch after the cruise.

5 hours HNL to LAX. 2-hour layover at LAX. 4 hours LAX to ORD and then a 2-hour drive home.

The Disney Wonder pulled into Honolulu Harbor at sunrise, and from the ship we could see Aloha Tower and the whole downtown skyline turn gold. Lisa was up early, and out on deck she signed I love you before the sun was properly up. We had one last breakfast onboard, Mickey waffles for Lisa and a fruit plate, with a coffee that had Moana drawn into the foam.

We said goodbye to the ship under a Welcome Back sign in the terminal, past a hula dancer statue and our tagged bags waiting on the pier.

From the harbor we headed to Honolulu's airport for the rest of the day. HNL has its own garden walk between the terminals, with a stone waterfall and a koi pond, and Lisa posed with the lit-up HNL sign. We looked through a couple of shops and had a plate lunch of kalua pork, rice and mac salad while we waited out the hours before our flight.

Los Angeles International (LAX)

We had window seats for the climb out that afternoon and watched the coastline drop away below the wing. We flew to Los Angeles first, the city lights spreading out under the plane as we came in that night, then connected through LAX for the overnight flight to Chicago O'Hare.

ORD

  • Chicago O'Hare (ORD) · United States

We landed at Chicago O'Hare early, just after six in the morning, and walked through the colored light tunnel between concourses on the way to baggage claim. Kathy photographed a sign for the shuttle buses to the parking lots, and from there we made our way home.
